thisisnl.nl - The National Police is launching a massive crackdown against the operators of online gambling sites after the public was surprised by a cop murder case that dragged down the police's top general.

The National Police, as reported by an Indonesian state-owned news agency Antara, said is hunting a big boss of big online gambling sites in North Sumatra.

Previously, rumors circulating on social media have alleged that Inspector General Ferdy Sambo, the former internal affairs chief at the National Police, was involved by backing the operators of online gambling sites.

This rumor has never been clarified by Sambo, who has now confessed he masterminded the murder of Brigadier Yosua Hutabarat.

The police never made any statement regarding Sambo's involvement, but rather responded with a massive crackdown against online gambling sites operator.

The Medan police, along with its fellow officers at Belawan, Deli Serdang, raided a location in Cemara Asri, Medan Estate Village housing complex in North Sumatera, the news agency reported on Friday, August 12,

"North Sumatera police continues to hunt the boss of one of the biggest online gambling operators, with initials ABK, of which until today, his whereabout is still unknown," Senior Commissioner Hadi Wahyudi, the spokesperson of North Sumatera police said, as quoted by Antara on Friday. 

He said the police, along with its cyber sub-directorate units is investigating online gambling cases, including finding out who their operators are.

The online gambling operators, according to the police was running their businesses from seven shophouses located in the luxurious housing complex in North Sumatera.

Hadi said the one the police are chasing is one of the biggest operators in North Sumatera, he said.

Medan, one of the busiest cities in Indonesia, has had a long history of gambling, an activity that is illegal in Indonesia, which population ranks the fourth largest in the world.
